Liquor Cabinet

Now that we have all this fabulous space we are in need of some new furniture.  We have lived in our new home for not quite 2 months, and that has allowed us to assess our situation and figure out what works and what doesn’t, and what we need to add in terms of furniture.

While on our staycation, we went to one of my favorite stores, Salvage Chic.  There are some really great deals to be found there, and the people who own it are super nice and helpful.  I always end up wanting to buy about half the store when I go there.

The one piece we picked up was a tin top cabinet that was in need of a new paint job.  We decided it would be perfect for a liquor cabinet, and by having a liquor cabinet, we could free up other cabinet space for my “pantry” and tupperware storage that was being occupied by said liquor and fancy glasses.

All it took was a light sanding (thanks to our newest toy, The Mouse) and a couple of coats of paint.  The other thing we did was clean off all the hardware.  I can’t stand it when people paint over hardware.  My husband and I once spent half the day picking paint off of all the glass doorknobs in our first apartment together, and they looked awesome afterward.  So note to all of you out there, just take the hardware OFF, and you don’t need to paint over it!

As you can see, I’m in an aqua phase.  I really wanted to add some color to the room, as we have a lot of browns going on.  Color is not something to be afraid of, grab it, embrace it, and run!  I have some leftover paint, and this color might just be making an appearance in another piece I already happen to own…

Fab Find – Fan

My latest find to share with you happens to be a vintage (and working) GE fan.  My guess is that it is from the 50’s or so, given the fact that it is not safe by any standards today.  But that is part of it’s charm.  It is in perfect working condition, and in fact, we use it all the time!  It’s nice and quiet, and pretty powerful.

We happened across it at Salvage Chic, in Pembroke, MA.  If you happen to have a car and live anywhere in the Boston area, it is totally worth a trip down there.  Christine, one of the owners, has tons of fabulous finds, and I don’t think I saw a piece of furniture in there for over $300.  During my staycation next week I hope to make a trip down there, because it’s a fabulous place to go.

Some of her stuff is totally quirky, there is tons of vintage, and Christine is super nice to boot.  She’ll even keep an eye out for certain items you might be hunting for.

This fan happened to catch our eye not only because it is fabulously vintage, but my husband also happens to work for GE, so it seemed fitting that we should get it.  The fact that it works is a bonus (although he would have wired it up to work had it not), and at $45, it was a total steal.

I’m hoping to hilight some fabulous finds I came across that help make our home just a little bit more out of the ordinary.  Sure, we have our fair share of IKEA and other name brand store furniture, but accessories, well those are a bit of a different story.

My first fab find to share with you is this lamp.  Well we actually have two of them.  I happened upon them in my grandmother’s basement.  I’m not really sure how old they are, but my guess would be 60’s/70’s, but again, I’m no expert.  They were in amazing shape, had awful shades, and just needed to be cleaned.  The shades we got at Urban Outfitters for maybe $25 or so a piece.

Unfortunately she doesn’t have anything else in her basement that I want (except for an ancient GE fridge that would be so energy inefficient it’s not even funny), but that’s ok with me.
